There is a saying in Chinese - indigo arises from blue but is better than blue. It's frequently used to describe a derivative that is better than its origins.

Where Hana Yori Dango is concerned, I think it's a case of "poo-colour arises from gold and is crappier than gold" (spot the pun).

This is Makino Tsukushi. Apparently in casting her, the producer said, "Tsukushi needs to be pretty, not beautiful, but a clean and pure look...Her eyes are very clear, and she's unlike those beautiful girls who have a lot of life experience." Which one might interpret as "innocent-looking". I'm sorry, but she looks totally like an OBASAN. She looks even more OBASAN than the Korean version, which I didn't think was possible. She's meant to be 19, by the way, but she looks like she's 32.

The notorious F4, mainland version. From left: Pooch face, poodle face, Shaolin monk, and "Look, my mouth matches my hands" (stolen from the ingenious Irene XDDD). Guess which one's their leader, Doumyouji. You'd think being the leader he would be in the most prominent position...but nope.

I bet the Korean team is thanking their stars that they're not the worst of the lot.

And a random writer's block...

Funny that I was lying in (my parents') bed just an hour ago thinking that maybe, once in a past life, I was a nocturnal animal and these habits haven't been shaken off yet. Sometimes I think daylight makes me feel tired...and night wakes me up O_o

A recent research paper supposedly said that people who sleep late tend to be more creative, and people who are early risers tend to not be creative. Broad generalisation aside, it's true that I do most of my writing and drawing late at night, when the Muse just doesn't stop singing. Especially right before exams. LOL.

So anyway, finally this batch of assignments done, so I can theoretically relax for a few days although I really should start preparing for final exam ==;

=____________________=||||||||||||||||

I'm about 15 minutes into Initial D movie (the one with Jay Chow).

OMG This will teach me that watching Japanese drama is bad for my health >___>;;;;;;;

One of the guys in the team they first race is soooooooooooo Kumai from Gokusen. And one of the guys on Jay's group is sooooooo Akira from Hana Yori Dango. And I swear I recognise the other guy too...he looks like Morita Go from V6...

Suzuki Anne is still really really irritating, but not yet as bad as her role in Ganbatte Ikimashoi.

Geh....it's kind of...infuriating (for the Japanese, I'll bet) that a movie based on one of their more popular manga has cast Chinese actors in most of the major roles while the Japanese actors stand around like trees. Bah.

Jay Chow's canto is sooo cute XD

I'm up to episode 13 of Mars...which is, in terms of the manga, the final volume, where various people get stabbed, sent to psychiatric hospitals, die, go to hell, amongst others.

Apparently there's more after this *shudders* Knowing how well the extension of Hana Yori Dango turned out, I'm not looking forward to this...

Rei: Vic actually plays the violent and playboy traits of this character very well, which comes as a surprise, seeing him in Meteor Garden. In fact, he's so good at being violent, I wonder why he wasn't cast as Doumyouji...LOL. Except, of course, Rei is violent without being stupid and narrow-minded. But the scenes where Rei-angst comes on is a bit...>__> Vic really overdoes the angsting. I realise that yes, Rei is a very mentally unstable person, who has probably been permanently traumatised by his experience in the mental hospital and with his brother, but Vic over-dramatises his vulnerability. Then again, I haven't really read the manga that well ~~;

Kira: DaS has the right petite stature and sweet face to bring this character off well. I don't dislike Kira that much, which comes as a surprise, because I tend to violently dislike typical Japanese "maidens in distress who are strong". Honestly, I don't see Kira as that strong. Certainly, what she went through was horrendous, but it would be disrespectful to rape victims everywhere if I were to say that she was exceptionally strong. An inconsistent trait in her character is that...after being assaulted, twice, by people who appeared to be kind, you'd think she would be more suspicious towards people she meet, but she's always refusing to see the bad side of people until she gets hurt =___= Stupid manga heroine trait again.

Tatsuya + QingMei: Lol, I wanted to see more interactions between these two and the main characters. QingMei becomes quite cute afterwards, and scenes with Tatsuya and Rei are always a laugh.

Masao: The actor for this dangerous character is either really good or really bad at acting. He sheds tears without looking sorrowful; his expression are slow to cross his face, as though he takes the time choosing which emotions to display; his laugh is dry and mirthless - as though he's laughing for the sake of expressing laughter, not because he actually needs to. He walks around slowly and woodenly...it all fits his character, but who knows, he might just be lucky it did.

Sei: (Rei's twin) This is one of the inconsistencies...He starts off being the sweet, gentle twin...then he turns out to be a pathetic little brother who spends his time whingeing to Rei...then he turns out to half a Dark Evil Side™ to him, which he leaves for Rei. Ugh. It'd be all well and good if it didn't seem like the mangaka was just making it up as she went along.

And the other major inconsistency is with the timeline. The manga timeline runs up until senior high, but the TV series decided to move it to a uni setting. For example, Kira gets raped when she's 16 instead of 13, as she was in the manga >__>; This...has a few repercussions on her character, but never mind that.

According to Rei, he moved to LA after his mother died when he was 5. He also claimed that, "Sensei, when I was 8, I've lived in LA for 8 years." This is either a gigantic inconsistency, or just another example of Rei's bottomless lack of intelligence.

Now, the next episode he gets stabbed ^0^ *Excited*

Argh, yesterday's entry was full of embarrassing errors =__=; Thank god no one read them all...LOL

Today's post is in Chinese because some things are easier to express in Chinese =P

这次的post跟我想说的完全相反 下回再说吧 ~~;

I've always wanted to do episode reviews...it's interesting to see the process of ideas and plots coming together...so if you're bored by me, don't read the rest ^^;

Episode 2 )

I'm told Mars is the archetypal shoujo manga, in that unlike the average shoujo, there's a very good plot behind it...I've only read the last book, so I can't tell, but it's surprising that apart from shoujo addicts, not too many people have heard about and read it. But if you want what seems like a fairly objective review, look here.

Anyway, I watched episode one of the Taiwanese live action production of this manga, which has Vic (Zhou YuMin) and Big S (don't ask ~~;) in it. These are the same two people who were in Meteor Garden - Hana Yori Dango - by the way, with Vic as Rui and S as Makino, and that was an acting achievement that made you squirm all the way through it.

Thankfully, both Vic and Big S are much better actors now ~~; At least Vic now has more than one expression in his repertoire...not that, as the original Rui, he needed more than one expression.

Mars starts off fascinatingly different from HYD, which was, in a shell, a repetitive light-hearted love story dragged too far beyond its finish. I mean, there's only so long that two people breaking up, coming back together, breaking up, coming back together can remain interesting to the readers.

Vic also goes out of type for this one...I think (not too up-to-date with his TV credits). He plays Chen Ling - manga equivalent Rei, an apparently uncouth, devil-may-care playboy...who spends half his screen time checking out the chicks at his uni. His best buddy, Tatsuya (Da Ye - played by...er, I can't read the last character...Xiu JieJie?), is the rather typical cool-headed, gentlemanly "foil" to Rei's character. Big S plays the impossibly shy girl, Kira (*waves fist* why does it have to be Kira???), whom, in Tatsuya's words, "is a strange girl who doesn't talk to anyone, but spends all her time drawing".

Rei has a special fascination with a drawing of hers which she had accidentally given to him when he asked for the way to a hospital. This brief meeting sparked Rei's interest in her, and he spends all his time trying to pick her up.

Within the rather fluffy romantic set up are interspersed moments of Dark Angst™. The reason behind Kira's phobia of men is because she had been raped before - by a boyfriend, perhaps? And somehow this draws the attention of her English teacher, who, because he knows she is too shy to defend herself, begins to sexually harass her.

Rei is hardly what he seems either. A moment in front of the mirror at a convenience store shows no reflection...and then one that smirks back at him. We find out that he has lived in a hospital before - though, I'm guessing, it was probably a mental hospital for children.

A patient from the hospital - whom I remember from the last volume of the manga - a boy called Masao appears with a rather ominous entrance. He is watching something with avid fascination, and when called back by his caretaker, who asked what he was looking at, he answers dreamily, "The most beautiful thing in the world." ...The camera then closes up on a snake halfway through killing a frog. I think the actor - whoever he is - brings off the character of the tragic Masao very well. In his perfectly gentle demeanour is a trace of mad savagery. He is a character that calls up both fear and pity, and the ending is not kind to him.

It's certainly not a set-up that is revolutionary. There's the expected romance, the underlying angst, the people and broken relationships of the past that they must overcome. The acting *could* be better, but it's not distracting from the plot, which is a good start. I wonder if actors ever rewatch their earlier acting and squirm in embarrassment...

And Vic looks good only when he doesn't smile x__x
