Muahaha. Actually this was someone's survey for a subculture they had to do? >__>

Wanted to waste time.

Had Japanese speaking test today. The teacher sniggered. LOL.

(Okay, admittedly, the line was funny - Partner: "Did you take photos?" Me: "Yes, I took lots." P: "Can I see them?" M: "No, you may not see them...")

Anyway!

Are you male or female?
Female

What are your hobbies?
Reading, writing, drawing, fiddling with photoshop, making web pages. It really hasn't changed since high school *sigh*

When and how did you first gain interest in anime/manga?
I was actually never a fan of anime (didn't even know what it was) when Sailormoon was on during year 6 to 8. I think the anime that definitively got me into it was Fushigi Yuugi (which I watched about 6 years ago now), but I remain more of a manga fan. The first manga I read was Mintna Bokura (7 years ago).

What is/are your favourite anime and manga series and why does it appeal to you?
Again, I'm not a huge anime fan - I really only watch the few stuff that I absolutely love, and so it's not too much of a comparison. I liked Gundam Seed, and I really do like Bleach up until they diverged from the manga. As for manga there's too many to name. Bleach is definitely towards the top, so's Black Cat and a few romantic comedies. Fruits Basket has fallen off the list a long time ago. In anime or manga, the main thing I look for is art. I have to be at least comfortable looking at it (some I just can't get used to..Saint Seiya, Slam Dunk, for example). My expectations for plot and story are lower than it would be if I were reading a book. Criteria would be: good art above all, interesting characters second, not too much wishy-washiness, not too much sexual innuendo and not misogynist.

About how often would you watch anime and/or read manga in one week?
Hmm...Maybe about two or three hours a week now ~~;

What sort of anime/manga merchandise and other products do you own?
A few posters that I've never actually looked at >_>; Arina Tanemura and Rurouni Kenshin artbook...that's about it. Not a big fan of merchandise, though I love artbooks!!!!!

Do you attend anime conventions such as Supanova and Animania? If yes, what sort of activities do you partake in whilst you're there and why?
Nope.

How has watching anime and reading manga influenced you, if at all e.g. your lifestyle, way of thinking, behaviour, beliefs etc?
Hmm...I started drawing anime-style? I'm sometimes told I act like a "cartoon character" and frankly I don't know if that's a compliment >_>; It's made me interested in Japanese traditional culture. Change of beliefs...? I doubt it. Though I admire their whole culture of passion for hardwork, I don't think I can ever adopt that sort of suffocating philosophy.

What do you think it means to be an Otaku?
I remember in high school I asked my Japanese friend "What does otaku mean?" and she gave me an utterly blank look and said, "A what?" It's a voyeuristic subculture, and I don't think it's a culture to which I (or anyone I know) belong. It's obsessive and in its own way, narrow-minded and rejecting of mainstream society. Like any subculture or culture, it has its definitive appeals as well as its not-so-glorious aspects.

I've never been one of those people who stuck their nose in the air and said, "Hmmph, that is sooooooo clicheeeeed."

That's why I like stuff like Gundam Seed and Black Cat and Vampire Knight (and even Hunter x Hunter can go in this category), which took tried and tired ideas and made it into something very good. Ultimately, everything's been done one way or another. I think it's just as much an achievement to make something old look good new as it is to create something utterly new.

And besides, ultimately, concepts of old and new are all relative to the individual.
