This is one of those endangered species of shounen manga that finishes its run within 10 volumes.

...The anime is definitely going to make me cry...

It starts off rather blandly as a typical take on a gun-wielding girl (in this case, a nun called Rosette) and her sidekick (Chrno) out to hunt down demons that were plaguing USA in the late 1920's.

There is a lot of Christian references I won't even hope to pick up on (stuff about the prophecy of Fatima?)

It develops into a story queerly reminiscent of war, families torn and shredded alliances. Rosette's younger brother Joshua was kidnapped by the demon Aion, who intends to use Joshua's own power schooled with Chrno's old powers to overrun the demon world.

It's not a story that focuses on plot - that's not to say that there were a lot of mistakes in the plot - but that it never goes into too much detail about the background of the demon world.

...It's not something that pours over the angst either, but maybe because of its light touches the story seems even sadder. Whether or not the mangaka excluded so much of the detail is intentional is another matter.

...It's an aching sort of melancholy, and admiration for Rosette's strength.

Geh...it's really hard to describe how I feel about this manga. On the one hand, the plot and emotional emphasis is nowhere as finely tuned as other manga, but there is still something poignant about the ending scenes.

I still don't understand the ending. It's probably an open one, leaving us to interpret whether or not Chrno really came back, and whether or not Rosette really saw him...

But she thought she saw him, and maybe at the very end, before her death, that's all that matters.
