GSD Final Plus
3 Jan 2006 05:35 pmHaven't had time to watch all of this properly since my computer died again. I think it's the power supply unit which died again, with due credit to the beautiful New Year's Day we had.
Argh.
Kind of skimmed through it and it looks like they've slotted in some things and buffed out the final episode.
The meeting between Shinn and Kira in the end was very brief, but since this is something we've waited the entire 50 episodes (52, to be exact...) for, I'll summarise the last bit here:
When Messiah went down, Lacus broadcast a message to all troops present and requested withdrawal by all sides. This was complied with fairly quickly. Athrun and Kira flew out of Messiah. Athrun then leaves to pick up Shinn and Lunamaria from the tattered remains of Destiny and Impulse, whilst Kira returns to Archangel by himself.
A year later (C.E. 74 - remember the war started in C.E. 73), a treaty was signed between "Earth" (represented by Orb) and PLANT. As the mediator for peace, Lacus was invited to return to PLANT and she accepted the invitation.
Shinn, Lunamaria, Athrun and Meyrin are visiting the memorial stone that had been erected to commemorate the victims of the Onogoro Island incident (this is at the end of GS, where Shinn's parents died; the same place that Shinn ran into Kira and Lacus in GSD-8...ish). Shinn admits that he's always hated the place, and (probably because of it) it has never been able to escape his memories. He reminisces that it hadn't been like this "back then", and now you probably can't conceal what had happened, and so no matter how beautiful the flowers planted are, they will always be blown away again (by people). He grips his phone and repeats he hates the place, then looks teary...as everyone else starts looking teary as well.
Athrun hears "Torii!" behind him and murmurs, "Kira." Meyrin turns back and makes a really cute wide-mouthed surprised look. Shinn looks back. Dramatic sea wind blows.
Lacus places down their share of flowers, and Meyrin gives her sister a really cute smile. Shinn looks kind of confused at Lacus and Kira. Kira and Athrun both turn to Shinn, and Athrun says, "Shinn. He's Kira. Kira Yamato. Freedom's pilot."
Shock from Shinn and surprise from Lunamaria. Kira smiles in his...typically braindead way. I'm sorry, but I don't like GSD Kira T_T Okay okay, he smiles in his typically gentle way. Shinn starts trembling and remembers how he stabbed Freedom. Hmph.
Kira continues smiling in his braindead way before seemingly coming to his senses and offering Shinn his hand. Shinn sort of reflexively withdraws himself. Kira asks if Shinn would accept it. Shinn seems to steel himself before grasping Kira's hand firmly. Unsettled by the movement, Torii flies off into the dusk.
Insert dramatic sea wind and music. I swear, they should put "dramatic wind" in the credits, because it had a pretty big role in this episode. Pan across all the other characters smiling in...relief? All the girls are pink-haired...as a completely unrelated note.
Anyway. Shinn reveals his articulative mastery by beginning his first proper civilised conversation with Freedom's pilot with a very proper and civilised, "Uh..umm..."
Kira suggests that he probably did have that botox injection by smiling in that deadpanned way again.
Gah, I'm so cynical today.
Shinn looks depressed and tries to speak, and Kira comes to his rescue, "No matter how many times it's blown away, we'll replant the flowers again." He then smiles like Kira should, in an optimistic and naive sort of way. "Definitely."
Athrun says, "This is our fight."
Kira says, "Let's fight together."
Stunned look crosses Shinn's face. Dramatic wind continues to billow unrestrainedly in the background. Shinn remembers snarling at Kira when they first met in Orb in front of the same memorial (geez, I guess he can't help but only have crappy memories of his meetings with Kira). The normal ending song plays ("Your shadow is like my own"). Shinn bursts into tears.
Brainwash complete.
The three couples then walk off in different directions, Lacus clinging lovingly onto Kira, Lunamaria and Shinn swapping a light smile, and Athrun looking evil with a none-the-wiser Meyrin following behind him.
The credits roll up with a completely inane flashback sequence of Kira and Athrun: giving Torii, meeting in Heliopolis, finally reconciling in Orb, being stuck with Cagalli in deserted cave...
It ends with a solemn-looking Lacus attired in a long dark robe strolling into a meeting chamber with ZAFT soldiers saluting her and Yzak and Dearka behind her back. (Oh, and before this was Cagalli strolling into her own separate diplomatic party)
Cue season 3.
Argh.
It would be so funny if all the fan speculation of Lacus, Kira and Athrun being involved in some ulterior conspiracy to overrun the world actually turns true in the next series.
Wahaha...imagine, Shinn having to fight against Freedom and Justice again except this time Shinn's the good side, and he'll have to work with Cagalli..........
I would have liked to see a reconciliation between Shinn and Cagalli too. Or even a confirmation of Athrun x Cagalli over Athrun x Meyrin would have been reassuring. Ech.
