Went and watched Harry Potter III today. It was good, for a HP movie :P It may have been due to the change in director, or perhaps the entire crew has matured in the process. The younger actors are certainly much better at their parts, though Ron's role seemed to be rather diminished this time around. Malfoy grew so much! He's face has elongated, and his hair looks faker than ever ^0^ Snape is cool XD This may be the first movie I'm saying it for. I think he's become less black and white, there are subtle hints of him being redeemable etc etc that will set an appropriate stage for the next movies, if there are any. I find it interesting that when Lupin turned into a werewolf and attacked the children, the first thing Snape did was to open his arms and cover the kids....my my, what a hasty character development there...a movie too early, perhaps? :P Nevertheless, the entire movie, as the SMH reviewer said, was a lot subtler than the first two, especially in the frame composition. The special effects are made to seem much more natural! I really liked that. The way people used magic to organise tools and everything was much smoother and natural, rather than the "ooh ooh, look at what I can do with my finger" feeling I got from the first two XD

I'm a little surprised at the casting of Lupin, because I had a rather different impression of him. I had imagined him to be a little more effeminate, more introverted and shier. Lupin (er, can't be bothered checking the actor) in the movie was chosen to be more the (younger) kind teacher/mentor, who seemed to know everything about what was going on, who's almost always in control.... I'm also disappointed in the new Dumbledore (hrm, he was there since the 2nd movie, wasn't he? Or did I fail to notice...h0h0h0~ That's how much attention I've been paying). He seemed...rather more patronising, a bit less wise, and a bit awkward in his role, with none of the enigma and amicability that the previous actor brought to the screen. Oh, Professor Trelawney was hilarious, as to be expected. Sirius was...cool. Not quite as cool as I hoped, but he passed XD

As for the plot, there were a lot of changes, but I think they kept most of the major stuff in. The subplots were cut out, and might bring some grief to purists - for good reason! Several of my friends who hadn't read the books found the plot hard to follow. The plot rather conveniently forgot to clarify the relationship between Pettigrew, Black, Lupin and Potter; parts of their school life actually became quite crucial to understand what the heck was happening (the patronus; the animagus; the betrayal etc). There's an interesting tension between Ron, Hermione and Harry...I foresee a possible love triangle (or not) :P (Oh heck, I know it's not really in the books, but you know Hollywood). Cho Chang did not appear, and there's only about 3 minutes of Quidditch. Boo.

There were plenty of laughs; Malfoy was quite the butt of the jokes this time around, poor thing. Ron spent his screen time with his face scrunched up in a whine. I'm told that the Dementors were frightening to children...but to me they seem more like a badly weathered cross between the Ring-wraiths (oh, prosecute me, LotR purists, I probably spelt the word wrong XP) and a scarecrow. There's a richer imagery too, I noticed, what with the birds and crows and the rest...

Not quite as completely satisfying as the book, but definitely braindead fun ^^ Especially sweet after exams. H0h0h0~
