mayoraaseiFinally found a copy of the first chapter of Fairy Cube.
It made me remember how I never read volume 13 of Count Cain.
Because I didn't want to see Cain die.
No matter how beautiful his death was, how peaceful and fulfilling it had been for him, how it had completed his promise with Riff "Let's walk the path of Hell together" I didn't want to read it.
Kaori Yuki's works are always sadistic and blasphemous. There is dislike, not of God as a deity, but of the very idea of higher beings. From the anguish-ridden characters, there is hatred for an omniscent being who was responsible for creating their suffering fate.
And so Cain promises, "Let's walk the path of Hell together" because he never believed he could ascend to heaven.
Her characters are always so tainted, the path they walk overrun with blood - of their own and others. They're always tainted with unspeakable sins, child of adultery, child of incest, child who was never meant to be born. And yet somehow they always remain beautiful.
They are always so tragic. They condemn themselves before anyone else. Maybe it is their way of convincing themselves to live, because otherwise there is nothing left in this despicable world for which they wish to live.
Strangely enough, if her main character is matched up with a girl, they always have a happier ending than those who don't.
Yet I still do not think of Cain and Riff as homosexuals. Just as I cannot think of Subaru and Seishirou in that role, no matter how supposedly obvious the signs.
It's a relationship that transcends the idea of sexuality and love altogether. They are a necessity to each other's existence. Riff will always be by Cain's side. Seishirou will always be the dark reflection of Subaru.
理所當然的存在
Cain and Riff died in each other's arms - Riff's skeletal hand embracing Cain, protective servant even in the end. And Cain chose Riff when he could have escaped. He had Merryweather waiting for him, the only member of his family left and the only one who loved him. But he chose Riff...it was the ultimate selfishness, but he could not live without Riff.

Fairy Cube is retreading her dark, tragic plotlines. By the end of the first chapter, the main character (Isuzu? Need to check the kanji) is killed by his father. Like Cain, Isuzu is an abused child...but his smile is dazzling and infectious. Possibly the brightest, cutest main character we've seen coming from Kaori Yuki.
Maybe there is romance this time, because he manages to confess to a girl before he got killed (the girl's name looks like either Suzu or Rin to me...)

Cain dies in Riff's arms. Riff...er, I suppose also dies in Cain's arms. But it's a bit more complicated (Riff's body was already decaying...) A good part of the actual conclusion to the series, rather than to Cain, comes after their deaths. And the conclusion (explanation of motivation) didn't actually make any sense, but hey, Kaori Yuki's forgiven for a hasty ending to a series that spanned something around a decade.

Date: 2005-12-08 11:20 am (UTC)I'd also recommend Ludwig Revolution, but it's another thing (like Count Cain) that she started and stopped in the middle of. She even said that she would want to come back some time and pick it up again.
And Ludwig is sort of...strange >_>;
