Well! I'm not really sure what to say! It is continuing to take a vastly different route to the original manga, yet still using some familiar plot lines, especially as background.
Train was assigned the task of destroying Torneo's nanomachine work. Rinslet enlists the help of Sven in stealing the nanomachine data. The three cross paths with each other, and neither side succeeds in their plan. Torneo tells Eve to kill the man who should have prevented the break-in but she remembers the smell of blood on Train and runs out of the Torneo mansion being "the demon" in the tag game. There we have the encounter between Sven and Eve, but this time Eve doesn't stab Sven before she is retrieved back to Torneo.
Rinslet and Sven, and Train separately try to break into Torneo's mansion once again. Rinslet goes down into the underground lab and finds it trashed before she arrived. Sven uses his Vision Eye to get to Eve before Train, but doesn't manage to escape before Train arrives and threatens to kill Eve. Torneo and his guards break into the room and stick some nanomachine amplifier on Eve, causing her to go into monster mode. She chases Train out the window and the two continuing sparring. Rinslet arrives and helps Sven out of his little problem with the guards.
Sven runs up to Eve and grabs the amplifier off her, getting stabbed in the process. Someone set fire to the underground laboratory and as Sven, Eve and Rinslet recuperates at a faraway vantage point, Train suddenly appears and cocks his gun at Eve. He remembers Saya saying, "If you don't have to shoot, then don't." He lowers his gun and without a word, leaves.
Sven and Rinslet hides away with Annette (she's the informant/bartender that Sven is acquainted with). From here, it moves uncomfortably fast. Train stops killing his targets. Chronos notices that Eve can't be found amongst the remains of Torneo's mansion. Train is called before the Elders and he says that he wants to be a free cat. Sephiria warns him to think twice, but he stands by his choice and leaves. Creed asks to "persuade" Train, and Sephiria allows him, but tells Belze (number 2) to keep an eye on Creed because she feels his malice.
Creed confronts Train and they have a duel. Train breaks Kotetsu (Creed's sword) and Creed goes all fanboy over Train (i.e. oooooooh Train~~ You're the best!!!) The agents sent to watch Creed says that they will report his failure, and Creed uses his invisible blade to kill them. Train meets with Saya and hands his gun to her. Creed watches and gnashes his teeth in jealousy. Creed then confronts Train again, asking him to join forces to create a new world. Sephiria goes personally to persuade Train, but Train maintains his position. Sephiria then fights with Train, giving him several chances to change his mind, but he still doesn't. Shiki (the Taoist who controls bugs) appears out of nowhere and tries to grab Train with a gigantic ugly cockroach and kill Sephiria with a gigantic ugly centipede. Except his spell somehow got broken by Saya's singing (like...wtf?). Train runs away and is joined by Saya, and they race through the streets to Train's home. Saya hands the gun back to Train and tell him that he needs it to protect himself as well as those important to him. She then invites him to watch the fireworks with her on the night after.
The next day, Train is woken up by the scent of roses and sees a note left behind by Creed. He runs towards where Saya was - at the festival. Saya has chosen a secluded spot to watch the fireworks and is met by Creed. He hunts her down and she's on the ground when the children run in on the scene. She stops him killing the children. He advances towards her again and when she tries to shoot him again, he cuts the bullet in half. He then stabs her. Train runs in on the scene and punches Creed away. Saya dies just after the fireworks start shooting, and she says "the fireworks are pretty" before she dies.
Just for the sake of comparison, I'll summarise the manga version of what happened: Saya lived in the same unit as Train for three months before she was killed. By then Train was already smiling and cracking jokes and teasing her, being very much the Train Heartnet we know, except only a shade more morbid. Both Sephiria and Belze has noticed Saya's presence, and Creed stalked Train to find out who Saya was. The Elders called Train forward because they reported him not killing his targets, and he retorted that a cat has its own will. He was then locked up for ten days. On the tenth day, Saya was in her unit when she was attacked by Creed. She jumped out of the window and ran into the streets, looking for a secluded area. The fireworks started just as she and Creed stop in the backstreet. A few kids walked in on the scene and she yelled at them to get out of the way. Creed used that distraction to give her the fatal stab. He then advanced towards the kids, and she used what was nearly her last strength to shoot and break his sword. Creed brandished the broken blade in front of Saya and threatened to carve her heart out, and by then she was already too weak to shoot again. He was then punched out of the way by a really, really pissed off Train, who found Creed's note when he came back from detention. Creed literally runs off. Saya told Train that she was planning to move out of the city, and that she really appreciated meeting Train, because though she met many people in her travels, no one else called her "friend". Her last line was, "You can forget about me."
The anime is obviously condensing the timeline down. They've also added a very short hint of a backstory for Rinslet and Sephiria. The other thing we get is Sephiria saying "Chronos protects the world", which is not something we got in the manga. I think Sephiria in the manga was a lot more pragmatic and thought of Chronos as a means to keep the world working, even if there were sacrifices - much like Vetinari's philosophy, really.
Though I disliked Saya in the manga - mostly because her role reminded me of Tomoe from Rurouni Kenshin, whom I intensely disliked - I felt here the anime missed the mark. The anime Saya felt too girlish and bubbly. The manga Saya was like Train's elder sister, she had a maturity that he didn't gain until much later, she was able to see through people to all their ugly side, but still value them for their good points. She was a carefree girl, but not someone who didn't know a threat when she saw one - she was ready for Creed as soon as he had his sword out. In her confrontation with Creed, she was able to hold her own until the kids came, which went a long way to show that she wasn't just some idle air-headed chick who knew only to spew idealistic cow droppings.
The anime has added that side about ideals. Chronos being there to preserve peace, Saya wanting to live for freedom and peace...What I liked about Black Cat, and also Saiyuki in this respect, was that the main characters weren't harping on about idealistic nonsense about saving the world and giving everyone freedom of choice. All they fought for were themselves, and somehow that suited the characters better, because in fighting for themselves, they were free.
It seems that Janus appears next episode. Not that I mind ^^v The other thing is they did manage to show that Sven was manage to discern Rinslet's identity, though it was timed a bit later than the original manga. So I guess they've restored some intelligence into the poor guy. Lol.
