On Gundam Seed...

I'm putting myself through Gundam Seed.....help T___T;
So far, I do like this a lot better than what I saw of Gundam Wing, in terms of animation, characterisation and art (though for animation and art it's not saying much). Apparently the premise for this story is pretty much the same as the original Gundam series but it takes a different turn during the middle, then finishes quite similarly. GW never really touched me (except drawing me into Relena hatedom), it had nice characters but in the end it just seemed a huge stage show without much emotion.
To start off, when I saw the art for GSeed, I thought "Help, not another Heero." Of course, Kira looks (and is) quite the bit gentler than Heero. I really did like what art I saw of it, and so I've been wanting to see GSeed for the last two years >__>; There's a lot of action in this one, and in the beginning, a lot of that takes place in outer space, so for the first 13 or so episodes, it was just spaceships exploding in fluffy pink clouds...
The characters are interesting, but that's not to say I like them. I still haven't quite understood the existing division between the "old humans" and the "new humans", but it seems quite the source of angst for all sides. I do understand the whole prejudice + jealousy turning into hate factor, but I wonder how the "new humans" (genetically modified humans) managed to reunite, and why they seem more intent on destroying peace than the "old humans".
I do like Kira (it helps that he has the same name as another Kira =P), and I thank the anime producers for not spending quite so much time with the violins and dramatic angsting moments (like, Hunter x Hunter, *cough*). But I wish he didn't sound so constipated. The howling and crying just sounded fake... His personality is a bit like Quatre's: very mild, very gentle, peace-loving and caring, but very composed underfire. I think I will like Cagalli, though I've only seen 5min of her so far. For all the importance Athrun gets in promotion art, I haven't seen him be anything other than prime yaoi fic material. And I wish he didn't sound so constipated. I like Mu? Didn't quite catch his name with the 50 or so names of people/places/organisations/gundams/ships/shuttles/etc being thrown around every half a minute. He's the pilot for the castle thing-y. He's got that good-looking, good-natured, capable captain feeling you get in those American war movies LOL
Ahem, not to say I like American war movies.
As for principle sporking target, it has got to be Flay (what a name *rolls eyes*). She's quite strong, which pisses me off, because she's one of those "strong by being twisted" types. She's not strong because she can cope with the situation, she's strong because she finds an outlet by hurting others....and she's one of those devious people who hurt others by first being kind to them. Argh. This doubly pisses me off because first, I HATE people like that, and second, I like Kira, so I HATE her doing that to him because of her stupid narrow-mindedness and her selfish need to blame her father's death on Kira when the real bastards who killed her father are the ZAFT. Whereas, I did not mind when it was Relena and Heero because I didn't like Heero down to his constipated Tamahome voice. Relena was just plain annoying, which was her redeeming point, because while she was annoying and incredibly stupid (especially in the beginning) she's not twisted enough to hurt the guy who paid the most for every battle. You couldn't even excuse Flay for revenge, because what happened had almost nothing to do with Kira, and so all her flirting and backstabbing is pretty much nothing but self-gratification.
But at least she dies in the end MUA HA HA HA HA. Unlike Relena.
But that's why I had a problem with the plot here too. It's not that there is a hole, so much. It's just so implausible for something like Archangel, knowing that they are being targeted by very strong forces, that they will continue being one of the major targets of any battle, knowing that they needed strong, reliable hands on deck, to accept someone like Flay, who doesn't do anything but float around in her little pink uniform and plant kisses on Kira whenever he comes her way. Even she admits that she can't work in the control room, nor can she pilot anything. It's not like she has medical training either. I can't believe someone like the 2nd captain(?) - considering that she cared for the strength of the military so much that she wanted to force Kira to stay and had used Lacus as hostage - someone like her would even accept Flay onto the ship. She's just a bloody waste of food and water.
The key thing about GSeed is that I find most of the characters quite believable. It wasn't the case with GW: you'd have to admit that the five pilots were all a bit of a nutcase in their own right. But people in GSeed seemed very real - Kira, his excellent piloting/programming skills aside, is very ordinary. I can understand the mentality of the three main officers/captains of Archangel, the students are all very ordinary teenagers, and even Flay. The other Gundam pilots didn't appear too much, which might be why I thought Athrun was a bit bland. I don't know if having such ordinary characters is what made it more emotionally intimate, but I have to say that though I don't madly fangirl the characters, I am fascinated by them...
Geh, my reviews are always so long ==;
