22 Dec 2004 10:34 pmI was researching "coming-of-age" ceremonies when I inadvertently came across...
shudo and male kabuki (performers/prostitutes).
I guess shounen-ai had a long history after all.....=___=||||
It was interesting because samurai underwent a coming-of-age ceremony (from ~12-18) called "genpuku", after which they changed their names to an adult name, changed their hairstyles, received their first swords, had the right to marry, separated from their mothers...and "became able to take on the dominant role in shudo relationships". I was totally "WTH" when I read that. That's like..."hey, I just had my genpuku, now I can be a seme!!" *Goes home and romps with random not-qualified-to-be-seme-person* ARGH ARGH ARGH *tears random yaoi fanfic-like images out of head* That is ARGH I thought the whole homoerotic thing was just an exaggeration of...well, "art", but obviously not.
*Goes and scrubs mind*
Edit:
This encyclopaedia's entry on shounen-ai has a list of "Some series that include shōnen-ai elements of various degrees". I'm surprised at its top titles:
* Fruits Basket
* Fushigi Yugi
* Gravitation
* Neon Genesis Evangelion
* Ranma 1/2
* Revolutionary Girl Utena
* Sailor Moon
* X
WHAT THE HECK has this person been reading?!?!?!? Gravitation is outright yaoi, I admit that, I can see it with X and I'll even concede Sailor Moon. But Fruits Basket??? (Especially after *that* spoiler about Akito). Fushigi Yuugi?? (Barring Nuriko, who's NOT bloody homosexual, he's transsexual AND he fell in love with Miaka, who was, incidentally VERY AND ANNOYINGLY female). Ranma???? What the heck?!?! Ranma is transsexual down to the very letter in that he totally doesn't have a fixed sex!!! (Oooooh I feel so stupid for saying that...) Guys don't run after RANMA they run after RANKO which is NOT the same thing. I mean, what happened to prime blatant glaring-in-big-red-letters candidates like BRONZE or ZETSUAI or SEIMADEN or YAMI NO MATSUEI?!?! I'll even chuck in COUNT CAIN for good measure, though I prefer to think that Cain and Riff aren't so much homosexual as just obsessively mutually attached. Blaaargh.
