And thus begins a new anime season, following on the heels of the great classic-to-be, Death Note.......or not.

Jyuushin Enbu is the new anime adapted from the manga of the person who wrote Full Metal Alchemist, considered the last best thing before Bleach, or something like that, and having a philosophical profundity unreached by other shounen of its time, supposedly.

Unfortunately, having Fushigi Yuugi the anime that got me into anime doesn't help with the case of Jyuushin Enbu, because as soon as I see the Northern Dipper and the blue characters lighting up on their hands/heart/neck/shoulders/legs, I cannot help draw associations with FY. Namely how shallow it managed to be.

One compliment I can offer is that shounen animation in recent years has attained consistent amazingness. Using much more clever cuts and edits than, say, Saiyuki, Jyuushin Enbu manages to use limited frame variation to create a great sense of movement and action, with the sort of fluidity that makes you admire the budget.

Suzumura Kenichi is great as the main character Taitou, who at least doesn't whinge as much as Shinn. Already, I don't like the female main character, who seems really cookie-mold Japanese female character at the moment. The others haven't appeared enough to judge.

I'm not too fond of the character designs, probably the biggest reason why I haven't watched FMA at all even though I have it sitting in my room somewhere (thanks, [livejournal.com profile] bludger1985). I do like the music though. The openings and endings are on the pleasant side of average. I am more fond of the background music, though I am not certain why. I am also not certain why I don't like the Gundam 00 BGM...

It's not an episode that really grabs attention, starting off very much the typical shounen-esque way, which I believe was the problem with FMA as well. It certainly doesn't pack the same punch as, say, the first episode of the last hottest anime before Death Note - Code Geass.

Rather like Gundam 00, it spent the first episode setting up the background plot of the story. In times of turmoil, a great prophesised one will be born, and will be the only one who can draw a magical sword from its scabbard. He will be the person that leads the world into stability. Of course, there exists his arch nemesis, also born from the stars, destined to wreak havoc on the world. Unsurprisingly, Taitou is the prophesised good guy, and the one who made him discover it was his arch nemesis, who single-handedly turned a sacred temple into a slaughterhouse in his (successful) attempt to steal aforementioned magical sword.

Still, if it should promise the same depth as FMA, it's certainly worth checking out, although the promises do not seem very obvious at the moment, at least to an outsider.
