PGE doesn't measure up to Host Club! =P

The characters in PGE are so boring compared to Host Club...it's just lady killer #1, 2, 3 and 4, and a girl who "is ugly but in dramatic moments is actually really really really beautiful"....which kinda makes you ask "uh, so what was the point of this series to begin with?!"

I'm speaking from the manga of both series, of course ==; I'm more a manga fan than an anime fan. Hehe...I can never forget the first day I read Host Club and thought I inadvertently stumbled on some poorly-drawn creepy shounen-ai, until the hilarious reveal at the end of the chapter (Tamaki: "Haruhi, you're a girl?" Haruhi: "Biologically speaking, yes." Tamaki: "#$(*&#$&(?!?!?!"...which in my opinion was 10 times funnier than the lightbulbs in the anime XDDDD)

You know what... Gakuen Alice (the one you lent me to watch) is real funny... However the girl does get a bit melodramatic.

Err...now you're inviting me to rant about why I don't like PGE as much as Host Club =P (this could take a while)

Personally I don't see PGE as breaking out of conventions. It really undermines its premises (and I hate manga that does that, because it's such a letdown) by making the girl actually really really beautiful. It's kinda like that anime cliche of people who take off their glasses look really good. The girl has to beautiful before she kicks ass (she never does anything useful in her chibi "ugly" form). And the girl is so unrealistic it's annoying. Haruhi on the other hand is such a realistic character that her deadpans make everything so much more hilarious.

...And I guess I've just been exposed to Jap culture for too long. Host Club's infinitely funnier because it satirises so many Jap trends. The concept of "host club" itself, the "prince in shining armour" (Tamaki), twincest (Hikaru/Kaoru), shota (Hani), the crossdresser (Haruhi), cosplay, otakus...it even made fun of the Shinsengumi fangirlism (which gets bonus points in my book) XDDD

That's why I said Host Club never should have been released to western audiences =/ You really have to know Jap culture to get it, cos otherwise it would be several gigantic "ewww"s along the way. The concept of "Host Club" is too unfamiliar to western audiences, and the closest equivalent we have is "brothel", which is totally not the same thing at all!

And besides, there are so many cross-references!! How can you not laugh at the "Uki*Doki Memorial"?? XDDD (There's a dating sim called "Tokimeki Memorial (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokimeki_memorial)" that was really really popular at one time...)

I might find PGE funnier if I was more into the Jap goth/punk culture. But personally I also prefer Host Club art more than PGE...PGE just comes across as lazy....and I'm really not into the visual kei (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_kei) look.

PGE...was a bit too conventional shoujo for me = =+ I think I only read up to vol 3 Orz

OMG dude, you obviously haven't read Fruits Basket (or Host Club, or been to Japan). Furuba's so bloody angsty and full of stupid plot holes I feel really really glad I didn't collect the damn thing. Can't anyone get through a single chapter without bursting into tears?! I'm never going to read her stuff again...she did the same thing in her older manga as well =[
