mayoraasei: There is no such thing as coincidence (Allen)

I knew, going into Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden, that it wasn't going to be a romantic comedy anywhere near the scale of the original. As expected, the casualties begin to pile up by the sixth book.

We already know from the original FY that Hikitsu (斗宿)and Tomite (虛宿)were the first amongst the seven to die; dying because Tomite rushed out onto the battlefield to save a child, and Hikitsu tried to shield him.

We also know that Takiko did indeed return to the original world after calling Genbu. Her father had written a suicide note to his friend, Takiko's first love, and the father of the future Byakko no Miko. Within the note, he had implored the friend to destroy the book, while saying that he was prepared to murder his daughter, who was getting devoured by the beast. After all, "the miko" is the sacrifice for calling on the "deity".

From the research Miaka seems to have done, and of which I vaguely recall, Takiko's father did die in suicide. There was also a grave for Takiko, suggesting that she did die in this world, unless Watase Yuu can conjure up a convincing reason...such as an empty grave.

What remains is what happens to Rimudo/Uruki (女宿). I am hoping that, unlike Hotohori, he survives and ascends the throne...if he doesn't, what was the entire point of calling Genbu if the country was going to go to waste anyway because all the heirs are dead?! =(

If Rimudo remains alive we can at least hope for a Watase-styled happy ending. For Miaka, Tamahome was reborn in our world as Taka to be with her. For Yui, she never actually loved any of the seven (how slack). For Suzuno, she returned to a happy married life with a man she did not love; Tartara cursed himself to stay alive so that the two of them could die, in different worlds, together =/

The best sort of ending that Takiko can get, knowing that she does get murdered by her father, is that perhaps she would be reborn in the book. Rimudo marries someone who looks exactly like Takiko...which is the exact sort of warpedness that Hotohori had when he married a girl who looked like Nuriko =/

Surprisingly, unlike other authors (*cough*Yuki Kaori), instead of getting soft as she age, Watase Yuu has gotten harsher with her characters. In Zettai Kareshi she made a first by killing off the main character, Night, so there's no reason why she wouldn't leave FYGK as a tragic ending.

FYGK is also missing a lot of the elements that made the original series so annoying. Miaka had the best time of it, collecting seishi who were eager to help out, who were seen as saviours. Takiko had to struggle to make herself liked; every moment of her and the seishi's existence was considered a bad omen, and for that they were hunted.

The range of characters also reflect a higher degree of sophistication. It has never stopped irking me that practically everyone on Suzaku belonged in a male harem, while those in Seiryuu were all social misfits, outcasts, mutants and/or a psychotic killer bent on punishing the world.

Hikitsu and Tomite's personalities were fixed from the original series. In setting the Genbu seishi as disliked, she has created a much more mature cast, who has had to struggle to survive and to accept who they are. This was something that the original FY didn't have, with all the seishi taking their destiny for granted. The Genbu seishi rebel against their destiny, and she has made it believable.

In the Freetalk, she mentioned that people complained that Inami (牛宿)was an obasan. I'm kinda glad of it. In her own words "the seishi don't survive by their face". I'm glad that only Rimudo and Hikitsu come across as the typical bishounen. The lack of "prettiness" and optimism allows for deeper characterisation across all boards.

I hope it wraps up within 10 volumes =/

A meme from [livejournal.com profile] ditch_gospel! I've done it before...but why not.

What was lying on his foot? Who was this doing the asking, and why was he wrapped in a blue shawl with ducks on it?

Blessed recollection flowed in. Young Sam was fast asleep, with Vimes's helmet clutched like a teddy bear, and Dribble, always on the lookout for somewhere warm to slump, had rested his head on Vimes's boot.

Aww.
