One day, the music director for Saiyuki called the cast to him and said, "Goku and Sanzo and Hakkai and Gojyo can't sing, so I want you all to sing as direly as possible."

That's obviously what happened.

=_________=

I'm not sure about Ishida Akira's singing, since there was no Athrun image song and I haven't heard him being forced into singing for anything else other than Saiyuki, so I'll forgive the music director for Ishida's entirely embarrassed earnestness in Hakkai's "singing".

I really don't know what's going on with Hoshi Souichirou. Maybe he has a twin and they alternate or something. He can sound really good in one song (DNAngel's "Hearts" comes to mind) and in the next make you want to claw your eardrums out (although sometimes both can happen in the same song). In Saiyuki, he sounds consistently the latter. AND he doesn't sound like Goku. Well okay, neither does Ishida sound like Hakkai. He sounds more like one of those tryhard busker on the streets who makes you increase your walking speed as you pass them.

Allow me to snicker for a moment at the irony of Seki Toshihiko singing Sanzo's song "Freedom". Seki Toshihiko, is, of course, the guy who played both Raww and Rey, who, of course, both fought against Freedom *Snickers* The song itself is so full of tinkling bells and jazzy saxophones (or jazzy something) and brimming optimism that Sanzo himself would probably start pumping bullets into the CD player the moment he hears it. Or at least, the moment he hears it and realises that it's supposed to be his song. Having heard Seki's rendition of Duo's song before and labelled it as one of the worst anime songs I've ever heard (although, to be honest, 95% of all character songs I listen to are jammed into that category), he does a good job at this one. But for what it's worth, he sounds like someone the trigger-happy temperamental Sanzo might want to shoot. At least he didn't go out of tune, in spite of several key changes ==;;;;

Possibly the best character song I've heard was actually (Host Club) Tamaki's "Guilty Beauty Love". I know...it's an incredibly cheesy, flamboyant song, but it's so Tamaki, and Miyano Mamoru manages (under the circumstances) a wonderfully natural, unforced singing. He might, in fact, be the only voice actor that I really like who can actually sing. Fushigi Yuugi Amiboshi's "Nocturne" is an old sentimental fave, and I still like it now. X Kamui's "Kesshou" and "Yakusoku" are probably the best amongst Suzumura Kenichi's repertoire (although the comparison isn't much - Host Club Hikaru's song or GSD Shinn's song are both mundane at best, frequently off-tune at worst).

I need to clean up my music folder(s). I have nearly 600MB just in my Gundam Seed/Gundam Seed Destiny folder =0=;;;;;

Edit: I can't remember what trailer it was for, but I think it's the Simpson's one, with a rabbit jumping across the grass? Yeah, the music was Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker (it was the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy bit). Hehe, what a guess XD

Hello. I happened to come across this post while searching for something entirely different, but as a die-hard Seki Toshihiko fan, I felt the uncontrollable urge to respond. If yo feel that I am being obnoxious in any way (I assure you that is not my intent!), please ignore me.

Anyway, I just wanted to clarify which song you were listening to? You said it was Sanzo's song "Freedom", sung by Seki Toshihiko, but "Freedom" is actually sung by Seki, Ishida and Hoshi together.

If you're judging your opinion of Seki's singing voice on just two songs, then I hope you will one day have a chance to listen to a few more! He has such an amazingly versatile voice (hard to believe the same man who voices Genjo Sanzo also voices Luva from Angelique, a character for whom he has to smile while voicing!). Have you had the opportunity to listen to some of Sanzo's other image songs? I'd be happy to upload a few for you.

I'm truly sorry for spamming your LJ in such a shameless fashion. *bows deeply*

I shall shut up now, and leave you in peace!

Hehe, no problems.

I'm afraid I wasn't all that clear in my ramblings, since I assumed no one would read it XD I actually really liked "Freedom". Uh...could it be a different version I downloaded? Because I'm fairly sure I didn't hear Ishida and Hoshi come in. I say that because Seki never veers off pitch (unlike the other two), and although he sounds too sweet for Sanzo (which was my main and only complaint), I have absolutely nothing bad to say about his singing in that one. Frankly, I think it'd take a genius to make Duo's "Everybody nice! Everybody nice!" sound...nice ==;

Ah yes, I'm rather fond of his range as well XD Unlike Koyasu Takehito, who always voices ossans and sounds like ossans wherever he goes, just by comparing the cheerful Duo and the temperamental Sanzo and the coolheaded Rey (GSD) gives a clear enough indication of what he's capable of ^0^

Although I must admit, I have the biggest soft spot for Ishida's voice, even though he has a more limited range XDD

Mind if I add you? My Flist is sorely deprived of people who appreciates Saiyuki like it deserves XD

A response! How delightful. I'm always happy to discuss the things that own my heart - like Saiyuki and seiyuu.

Anyway, I have to correct my comment in the other post: Freedom is sung by Seki, Hoshi, and Hirata, not Ishida..>_<..

There is another version of "Freedom", sung not by a seiyuu but by a professional singer, Masaki Nomiyama. Is it possible this could be the song you heard (although with Seki's voice being as distinctive as it is, it's hard to believe it could be mistaken)?

About Ishida's voice, all can say is that it's a crying shame that he no longer sings at all. I actually really like a couple of his earlier songs. I was also a little bit confused when you referred to Ishida's voice in the Saiyuki vocal songs, seeing as he hasn't actually sung any Saiyuki songs. Hakkai only has one "song", which is actually just spoken word...

Yes, please feel free to friend me! I'll friend you back if it's okay. Pleased to meet you! ^_^

Okay...I'm now really confused =0= There are several "Hakkai" songs out there, one called "Knight of Midnight" and another is...."But but but"? Wait, I'm not even sure that one's from Saiyuki, but apparently it's sung by Ishida @__@

Gendou is not to be trusted =0=;;;

To tell you the truth, I don't know too much about the Saiyuki soundtracks.

Okaaaaay, now I'm really confused ^^;;; So which songs are sung by Seki? I'll go listen to the right ones this time.

Oh no! Confusion and chaos!^^

Well, some of Ishida's songs for other anime may be mistakenly mislabelled as Hakkai songs. Hakkai's one and only "song" is "Sei Mei Sen... Something on my mind", and is actually really nice and soothing.

Which ones does Seki sing? The list keeps on growing, but to date, reads thusly...

Solitude, Game, The Clouds Break, Shangri-La, Preparation, Trigger, Dayfly, and Nightmare, plus various duets and group songs.

My goodness, do I need to upload anything for you? Seriously, I'd be happy to.

That list is just his Sanzo songs, of course!
