mayoraaseiFeeling rather masochist, I went and downloaded the Japanese raw (i.e. no subtitles) of the 3rd part of GSD compilation special. Watched it all last night, all 90 minutes of it (yeah, this time it was just in one part and not two). Am finding that I pick up more phrases from the raw than I do from watching it subtitles. I think I just get lazy and not bother listening when there are subtitles...or perhaps I'm too busy reading them? Excuses.
The director surrendered to pressures from Athrun/Cagalli fans (who affectionately call themselves AsuCaga fans). The interaction between Meyrin and Athrun, and Mia and Athrun for that matter, were cut massively. The Athrun and Cagalli reunion went better than in the anime; although I'm proud to say the only thing I picked up in that entire conversation was Cagalli saying "It's hard" ==;
I've also discovered in the order of comprehensibility: Stellar > Murrue > Rey > Kira > everyone else > Athrun > Talia.
...Yeah, in the dialogue between Murrue and Talia, I could only understand Murrue's side of the conversation ==;;;; And I didn't understand a single word of Athrun's monologues ==;
Everything else went the same way. Because it's more condensed, I think a lot of issues were made clearer: what spurred Stellar to go crazy, how Stellar's death translated for Shinn, how Shinn defeated Kira (in this special it was made to look like the ultimate strike was timely rather than skilful, although timeliness is also a handy skill). Andrew fans will be displeased to find that his battle scenes are cut in order to maximise Strike Freedom's ==;
1) Shinn returns Stellar with Rey's help and the two are locked up for it.
2) Stellar turns Berlin into toast. (I still think Destroy is cool~)
3) Kira and AA arrive first. I Like Destroy, it makes Kira work to survive.
4) Shinn comes charging in and half-kills Stellar by going straight for the cockpit (I wonder why it rejected Freedom and not Impulse? ...Must be the power of love.) Neo hauls him aside and tells him it's Stellar. Kira takes Neo down. Stellar goes crazy when she sees Neo go down and Kira tries for her again (and gets rebounded again by her force shield). Shinn chucks Freedom aside, to the "WTF?!" of everyone onboard Minerva. Shinn talks to Stellar, who starts calming down, and there's that naked flying around sequence again... Stellar gets stunned out of her daze by the appearance of Freedom. Okay, this time it's made REALLY OBVIOUS that it's the sight of Freedom that drove Stellar over the edge. Stellar charges up her cannons -- and it's made REALLY OBVIOUS that whatever Shinn tries to say, she wasn't going to listen, AND that Shinn was in point-blank range for the cannons. Freedom flies in and jams the firing cannons, which explode. ...Kira makes this horrible snarl that sounds more like Goku (Saiyuki) than Kira ==;;;;;; Just to clear up the "who's bloody fault is it" business: Kira WAS NOT approaching Destroy while Stellar was sedated. His mobile suit was hovering behind Shinn's, and Stellar took THAT long to look behind Impulse to see Freedom. What ultimately pushed her into the phobia mode was half Neo's fault and half Kira's. It was Neo's words ("If you don't fight, Stellar, everyone will be killed"), and the sight of Neo being cut up by Freedom that made her go into her phobia mode. BUT, the very moment before Stellar went crazy, Freedom did not make any provocative movements, AND Shinn was saved by Kira acting when Destroy moved.
5) Stellar dies with the same last words ("Shinn....su...ki..."). Shinn's family's death is cleverly juxtaposed to his reaction to Stellar's death. Shinn drops Stellar in the lake as Dullindal and Mia make their announcement.
6) Dullindal announces the existance of LOGOS ("the merchants of death"). Athrun looks flummoxed by the fanatic response his broadcast engenders.
7) The second half opens with AA being hunted down by ZAFT forces, with Minerva to greet them. Athrun demands to know why they're attacking AA when Dullindal declared war on LOGOS. The Orb pilots onboard AA demands to sortee, but Murrue denies permission.
8) Talia makes a contact with AA (presumably with a surrender offer, but I don't remember the lines and I can't understand a word of her speech). Murrue responds with a "thank you" and a "but we have things to do" (see! I can understand hers!)
9) Shinn takes Rey's advice about Freedom's weakness - that the pilot's always aiming at the head, the arm, the weapons and the legs. Kira's having a hard time dealing with an opponent who can calculate all his moves, and Shinn's smirking smugly. Shinn uses Impulse's advantage (removable parts) and takes Kira completely by surprise several times. AA is getting badly damaged by a combination of ground attacks and by Minerva. As AA approaches the ocean and prepares to submerge, Minerva fires its Tannhauser. In the tsunami (==;) generated by the firing, Kira gets buffeted aside, and Shinn charges up and sticks his beam sabre straight through Freedom. At the giant shiny explosion, Athrun is the very image of aghast. While Shinn chuckles "Stellar, I did it", Athrun screams "KIRA!" (It wasn't as heartbroken as the original anime scream =P)
10) Blue Cosmos are getting hunted down. Djibril runs.
11) Shinn gets back to Minerva to cheers and whistles and applause. I'm still not exactly sure why Shinn finds it necessary to approach Athrun just to gloat. Athrun puts a fist in Shinn's face. Rey tells Athrun off saying that AA isn't an enemy.
12) Dullindal calls Athrun and Shinn to the hangar to receive Legend and Destiny. Interesting to see Athrun's expression go from curious to dubious to utterly unsettled. Even more interesting to see Shinn taking steps forward when he's offered the new suit, and Athrun taking steps back.
13) Mia overhears Rey and Dullindal's conversation ("As I expected, Athrun is no good.") and tells Athrun. Athrun wants to make a run for it, Mia doesn't (a glimpse of her life before and as Lacus). With Meyrin's help, Athrun escapes...and has to take Meyrin with him because Rey insists on putting a few bullets through them. Athrun has cool combat skills~ XD Meyrin's admirably swift in making her decisions: to help Athrun, to raise a false alarm and to leave with Athrun. Not a bad communications officer =P
14) Shinn is hesitant about fighting Athrun, but ends up sticking his brand new Destiny beam sabre through Athrun anyway ==; OMG...when Athrun goes "You don't know anything" Shinn has the bloody audacity to yell "WHAT DID YOU SAY?!" This from a guy who's been yelling "you don't know anything" to Cagalli and Athrun and Kira.........You've got a love a guy whose only response to being confused by any philosophy more complicated than "kill everyone" is "IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT!!!!!!!!!!" After he sticks it through Athrun, he bursts into tears ==;;; Talia, hearing the news, looks pissed off but doesn't say anything to Dullindal. Lunamaria and Shinn hug each other crying ==;;;;
15) With not even the barest introduction, forward to the fight at Heaven's Base where the three ZAFT reds own everything in a way not even Kira manages ==;;; (One stroke of the beam sabre and the entire Destroy is carved up? WTF?! What happened to the force shield?!)
16) AA has returned to an Orb-owned island. This bit is funny XD Athrun wakes up and sees Kira. He bursts into tears and says, "You...died..." Kira replies with a straight face, "It's alright, you're still very much alive.*" BWAHAHAHA...I bet Athrun's first thoughts were "Damn, heaven's not all they said it would be." And then he saw Cagalli and fell asleep with a smile. Aww moment please.
17) Eternal gets attacked as soon as Lacus finds the Destiny Plan. They muted the exchange of commands, and had Athrun voice over something else >_>;
18) Athrun...he looks like he's in so much pain...tells Kira to protect Athrun. Kira takes his advice with a really happy, "Thanks, Athrun!"
19) Andrew got his only fighting time taken out T__T
20) Kira's reunion with Lacus in space is juxtaposed with Athrun's reunion with Cagalli. They've also taken out the bit where Kira eagerly says "with this, I can properly do battle"...and changed it to something milder.
21) Kira launches Strike Freedom with "Kira Yamato, Freedom, ikimasu"...Does he always leave out the "Strike"? SF is so bloody overloaded with gunpower. Kira manages to wipe out the ZAFT brigade without even going SEED.
22) Shinn has nightmares about Stellar AND Athrun's deaths. Ray tells him that they're enemies, and that he's too soft-hearted (kind), he won't be able to protect anything.
23) Shinn gets a service medal. He and Rey both get FAITH status. After the presentation, they hear news that Djibril is spotted in Orb, and Dullindal lets out a little smirk. Athrun is still in paaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiin.
24) Yuna makes an announcement....the conclusion: Orb and ZAFT declare war on each other.
25) OMG...THEY USED THE EXACT SAME 5 SECONDS OF FRAMES for the two occasions Meyrin visit Athrun in the clinic. God they're cheap. Ah...the famous Neo/Mwu "shousa" moment..."Ore wa shousa janai desu yo. TA-I-SA."
26) Murrue's boobs keep bouncing...AHEM. Cagalli's ugly shiny thing appears (gotta love a mobile suit that gets the same response from everyone - "WTF is that?!"). It's called Akatsuki (Dawn - it's certainly brighter than the sun) for the people who need reminding. Cagalli orders Yuna arrested, which the commanders are only too happy to comply, personalising it with aggression.
27) Cagalli gets cornered by Shinn even after pulling a classic Athrun move. Kira comes to the rescue, of course. Athrun is still in paaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnn poor guy.
28) Athrun launches in Infinite Justice. The end...he's not in pain any more? >_>;
