i am still alive
27 Jul 2006 10:53 amOne more 8am class (the 5th this week) and I'll be finished!!!!...for the week.
We've had 4 hours of cell pathology this week. Not a single word on pathology was taught =0=||||
To be honest, this entire week was such a waste of time. Argh.
Gedo Senki (based on Earthsea) is being released this week or next week some time. In Japan and South Korea only. I have no idea when the English release might come...
Those who went to the previews were apparently disappointed with it.
There are multiple possiblities that might have caused this:
1) The movie was directed not by Hayao Miyazaki, who brought us all the old Studio Ghibli favourites (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, etc), but by his son, who may or may not have done an equally good job.
1a) It is also his son's first film, and le Guin had also originally wanted Hayao to direct it.
2) There was a lot of tension between father and son because of this project which resulted in Hayao finally bowing out of this project completely. The sentiments may or may not also affect the critics, who would have been huge fans of Hayao.
3) The preview was watched by Japanese viewers, who may or may not like the sort of stories that Ursula le Guin produces. Even the original books wouldn't have catered to everyone.
It's been at least 6 years since I last read the Earthsea series, and I can remember nothing of it, except that it had a running debate on the importance of names and naming, which was rather quaint. It is full of symbolism, which might be lost either in the translation into a different medium, or just simply the transfer across the cultures.
But if I had to put one word to my memory of the books...it must be "pallid", probably because I can remember so little of it.
I mean, it's been just as long since I last read Kay's Fionavar Tapestry, but I can still remember stuff...even if said stuff is mostly orbituaries.
PS: SOMEONE CHECK FOR ME...........why do I keep getting this impression that Ged was dark complexioned? Like American Indian? And Tenar was a white girl?
Apparently there was an Earthsea miniseries 2 years ago.
The Iceman (X-Men) as Ged and Lana Lang (Smallville) as Tenar *CRIES*
*Looks at more photos*
*Cries some more*
Oh god. Need to soap out my eyes.
