Wow...LJ's been quiet lately (except for mine. Yay for non-conformity! XD)
(Everyone: Stop. Rubbing. The fact that you finished your exams. In.)
Muahahahaha.
I didn't download the GS special editions, although apparently the animation was done better in that one than the original series. For GSD, people say that the animation in the special edition looks worse than it did in the original, but I can't be bothered picking out the difference.
The SE's are basically shorter, summarised versions of the original series. For GSD there are 4 parts. The first part "Break World" summarises episodes 1 to 13 - and the first part was screened as a two-episode entity? Confusing? You bet! Especially with subbers marking the links as "SP ED Part I Part II (END)" (so, is it part I or part II or the end?!) and the sizes of the files ranging from 200mb to 2GB @___@
This goes from episodes 1 to 7, approximately.
Because of the time constraint (each part being 90 minutes...ie each episode being only 45 minutes), the material is heavily condensed and as a result feels loose and disconnected.
While it is no substitute for the original, there were actually parts about it that I liked more than the original.
Firstly, it's more action-based. The entire first part was almost entirely action - the theft of the gundams followed almost immediately by the Break World incident (destruction and fall of Junius 7).
We begin - almost inexplicable, with Kira and Lacus pacing the seaside.
The next sequence is jumpy and almost incoherent: Athrun narrates the parable of Eve and the Garden of Eden as Cagalli meet with Dullindal. The sense of skittish discontinuity lasts as the scenes race through the meeting and the walkthrough in ZAFT's armoury, even while the political discussion continues as a voice-over.
Due to the condensation of events, the characters have somewhat changed.
Shinn, for once and for the first time, is acting like a main character. For once, we see his grief-twisted conviction as something that's understandable and sympathisable, rather than the whining of an immature, narrow-minded child. At the characterisation level, everything is much more subtler and done much better than the original.
Athrun, grabbing Cagalli's arm as she berated the ZAFT teens about their joke on death, shouting at her sternly, "That's enough!" And the surprise on the teens' faces when Cagalli subsided obediently.
We see it better this time - Athrun's undiminished authority, Rey's quiet shrewdness, Cagalli's grief about her father, and Shinn's anguish about what he has lost.
We see it better because we see less of it. Through the raging explosions, it's these quieter moments of conversation, Cagalli's privately wept tears, Shinn's nostalgic smile as he plays with his phone, and Athrun, brooding about loss and violence and power.
Because it's less it become poignant. Because we see less of Athrun's indecision before he asks for the use of a mobile suit that we understand him better - that he is not a person who can stand by idly when he knows he can and should do something...and this, this precisely, justifies why he left Orb for ZAFT.
The fragmented feel is limited more or less to the action scenes, which appear to attempt to bring Athrun more to the fore in this particular part. This might make his defeat by Kira later seem less of incompetence on his part ~~;
Humorous parts exist, even if they're sometimes somewhat sourly humorous.
Lunamaria's crush on Athrun seems to no longer exist. As Athrun prepares to launch, she smirks a little, "How does it feel to be back on the battlefield? Don't worry, we'll cover you."
To which he mutters, "Don't look down on me."
Yzak is funny, as he was, yelling at Athrun, "Don't give me orders, you damn commoner!!!!!!"
Because more time is allowed for special editions to be released and a lot of things undergo editing between the original and the SE, people say that what's in the SE should be taken as "the canon".
The only reason I downloaded this was because apparently one needs to watch what happens in the SE before watching the GSD movie....
*Sigh*
