Star Wars wasn't that great....
9 Jun 2005 08:14 amI should probably stop interpreting "it was much better than XXXXX" as "it was really really good!!! Go fangirl it!!"
=_____=;;;;;
I didn't like it that much. It was better than Episode I, but that really isn't saying much. It was visually stimulating, but intellectually and emotionally deadening =___=;;;; It was such a strange feeling, to think "wow, the special effects look cool, but damn I'm bored, and will both of you stop whingeing about Obi-Wan?!"
What I liked:
- The design of the set *___*
- The special effects
- To some degree, the action/choreograph
What I didn't like:
- The lines ("Oh Anakin, you're breaking my heart!" - in the movie's most poignant moment, causing me to nearly fall off my chair)
- The acting (this really goes hand in hand with the lines. It's really difficult to look and sound anything but retarded whilst uttering lines such as mentioned above)
- The pace (this is more due to limited screen time than anything else, but I still thought Anakin's transition was a bit too quick)
I don't know if it's because a) I haven't seen Episode II, or b) I saw Episode I a long time ago, or c) I haven't seen Episodes IV - VI, or d) I was never a big Star Wars fan, or e) I've been watching too much Gundam stuff lately (which reminds me, I really need to get through Zeta Gundam one of these days...) but I just felt incredibly frustrated that I didn't feel for any of the characters, and that when Anakin turned into Darth Vader and Padme died, I was thinking "how much longer is this going to go? I really need to go to the loo".
The only moment I felt vaguely - and vaguely it was - moved was when Obi-Wan turned back and shouted, "You were the chosen one! You were meant to destroy the Sith, not join them!" (etc) Ah...must thank Ewan McGregor for his acting ~~; Of course, by the way, that beautiful emotional (well, as far as emotional can be in this movie) moment was marred by the line "You were my brother! I loved you!", which caused my head to explode at the thought of the number of horrible slashfics that's going to materialise due to this one line. Poor Natalie Portman, I think she got worst of the lot, not that Anakin's lines were any better.
As far as the action went, it was okay but some parts still irked me. General Grievous (even though I haven't seen EpiII) must have become the most dextrously challenged villain ever ==;;; How can you be wielding FOUR light sabres at once, two at head height and two at feet height, and claim that you are "trained in the arts of the Jedi" and STILL get pwned by someone like Obi-Wan?! Scenes where they got sucked out into vacuum irked me too because they weren't wearing space suits but could still breathe. The Yoda vs Sidius was probably the best fight, but the Anakin vs Obi-Wan was just..."umm, can you two stop spinning your sabres 2 metres away from each other and actually, you know, try to chop each other's heads off, because that's what you're supposed to be doing?!"
Enough ranting ==;;;
SWIII inspired me to think "hey, maybe GSD isn't that bad after all"....
