23 May 2005 09:24 pmSometimes I sit in physiology and anatomy and histology and biochemistry classes thinking "wow, these cells and organelles in my body work so hard all the time just to keep me alive!"
Like liver cells, taking in the blood freshly absorbed from intestines and trying to make sure all the waste gets thrown out of the body before it gets into the circulation. It makes you feel terrible about dosing yourself with alcohol and putting these poor cells into overdrive!
Or the heart, never able to rest (as long as you're alive, that is), and always cautiously regulating how much to contract and how quickly.
Or in the cells, little mitochondria running around with hydrogen and ATP streaming through their little pores, trying to keep the cells alive...and all these enzymes that regulate, initiate, proof-read, lyse, suppress protein and DNA synthesis just so that you don't get an ugly life-threatening tumour developing every second cell division.
My cells work so hard.
*Sighs contentedly and goes back to wasting time*
(I'm terrible)
