not deep enough?
12 Jul 2006 03:31 pmI often hear people say stuff...particularly about mainstream books, movies or manga/anime, that "it's not deep enough" or "it doesn't make you think".
Strangely enough, those same books/movies/anime/manga give me plenty to think about.
I wonder, does something have to be purposely contrived to be philosophical and "deep" before these people feel obliged to think?
Some people become so derisive about it, that others read these mainstream stuff and analyse them.
Sometimes I think it might be these arrogant people who are the less sophisticated.
There are plenty of things to look for in the deep, and so any is easily found. To make some thought of something that is seemingly shallow and understated might in fact take more consideration.
And many times I wonder...do people just say stuff like that to make themselves sound intelligent?
...That, had been, totally incoherent.

Date: 2006-07-13 11:47 am (UTC)Such things often come across as superficial or fake. Like the Da Vinci Code. It made me want to hurl.
Some things are meant to be taken at face value as well. Sure, there are interesting themes left half-buried in Bleach, but only a loser would go into a deep psychoanalysis of Ichigo's behavior and personality based on the physical appearance of his Zanpakutou and its anthropomorphic projection. ("He must have a fetish for old men! ZOMG!" *giggle* )
Some people just can't appreciate beauty without trying to figure out what makes it beautiful, or breaking it down so they can find whatever ugliness they believe it conceals. Look at Alice in Wonderland or Peter Pan or Winnie-the-Pooh for heaven's sake! If you read them, it's pretty clear that they were originally created to entertain children, but people keep finding whatever meanings they WANT to find in them.
(And this reply is even more incoherent.)
